Nuclear Lion&#8217;s Share of DOE R&#038;D Subsidies"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"twttr_buttons\"><div class=\"twttr_twitter\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/share?text=Fossil+Fuels+%26+Nuclear+Lion%27s+Share+of+DOE+R%26D+Subsidies\" class=\"twitter-share-button\" data-via=\"\" data-hashtags=\"\"  data-size=\"default\" data-url=\"http:\/\/www.themodestproposal.com\/?p=145\"  data-related=\"\" target=\"_blank\">Tweet<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div><\/div><p>Opponents of renewable energy (it&#8217;s hard to believe they exist) claim that renewables cannot compete economically with oil, gas, and nuclear power. \u00a0I have discussed the fallacy in this argument from an economic theory point of view <a title=\"Market Failure: The Case Against Unfettered Markets\" href=\"http:\/\/www.themodestproposal.com\/?page_id=131\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>, but it is also important to point out that the subsidies for renewables are a tiny fraction of those for coal, oil, and gas. \u00a0<a title=\"Hidden Costs of Energy: Unpriced Consequences of Energy Production and Use\" href=\"http:\/\/www.themodestproposal.com\/?p=107\" target=\"_blank\">Many reports<\/a> on this topic focus on the comparison of overall subsidies to fossils and nuclear vs. oil &amp; gas, but in the context of all the criticism that the Department of Energy (DOE) has gotten after one of their many investments in renewables failed, I thought it would be interesting to look at the comparison of just DOE R&amp;D funding on fossils and nucelar vs. renewables.<\/p>\n<p>The non-partisan Congressional Research Service published a <a title=\"CRR - Renewable Energy R&amp;D Funding History: A Comparison\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fas.org\/sgp\/crs\/misc\/RS22858.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">recent report<\/a> documenting the history of R&amp;D funding by technology. \u00a0The conclusion: whether you look back 65 years or just over the last 10 years when R&amp;D investment in renewables R&amp;D have spiked, DOE spending on R&amp;D for fossil fuels and nuclear has been far greater than spending for renewables R&amp;D. \u00a0The below figure from the report shows the share of R&amp;D spending by technology type from 1948-2012. \u00a0About 75% of DOE R&amp;D funding have gone to nuclear or fossil fuel technologies:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.themodestproposal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Figure-3-DOE-RD-Investment-by-Tech-1948-20121.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-147\" title=\"Figure 3 - DOE R&amp;D Investment by Tech - 1948-2012\" src=\"http:\/\/www.themodestproposal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Figure-3-DOE-RD-Investment-by-Tech-1948-20121-1024x827.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"516\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.themodestproposal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Figure-3-DOE-RD-Investment-by-Tech-1948-20121-1024x827.png 1024w, http:\/\/www.themodestproposal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Figure-3-DOE-RD-Investment-by-Tech-1948-20121-300x242.png 300w, http:\/\/www.themodestproposal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Figure-3-DOE-RD-Investment-by-Tech-1948-20121-185x150.png 185w, http:\/\/www.themodestproposal.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Figure-3-DOE-RD-Investment-by-Tech-1948-20121.png 1384w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The fact is that R&amp;D is good for society and is under-provided by markets thanks to the economic concept of <a title=\"Market Failure: The Case Against Unfettered Markets\" href=\"http:\/\/www.themodestproposal.com\/?page_id=131\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;market failure&#8221;
